At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Extension, Cherne established school and pool records as a member of Coach Bill Ritter's swim team (1949-51). He lowered the 200- and 400-yard freestyle records to 2:17 and 5:19 and participated on a record-setting relay team. He won second and third place medals at the Midwest Tournament in 1951. After graduating with an associate degree and two letters from UWM, he continued his swimming career at UW-Madison, where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering. His education led him into aerospace and to Cape Kennedy, where he was guidance crew chief on the Titan programs and later, in other capacities, on the Apollo launches. He was also involved with Skylab projects.
