Ferrara captained the 1941, '42, and '43 swimming teams at Milwaukee State Teachers College and set the state record in the 200- yard breaststroke in 1941 and '42. He was also a member of the medley and freestyle relays that set state records while at Milwaukee. He also attended Western Michigan University and set school records there, as well as placing at the AAU Championships. After graduation, Ferrara taught Art at Whitefish Bay and Shorewood High School and taught handicapped and blind children to overcome their fear of the water.
