In football, Rauch started as an offensive guard for three years, as well as nose guard on defense. He captained the 1958 wrestling team, took second in the Wisconsin AAU tournament, and the team captured the state title. Rauch's best season came in 1956 when he recorded a 12-2 mark and beating three state champions that year at the heavyweight division. He received the Kibbe Award in 1958. Rauch has a M.F.A. and M.A. from UW-Madison in Fine Art.
