Engel was captain of the cross country team in 1990 and 1991 and of the track team in 1991 and 1992. He had UWM's best time in cross country in four of seven meets as well as the team-best time in the 800, 1600 and 5000 in indoor track. He was named MVP of the cross country team and received the prestigious Herman Kluge Senior Athlete Award in 1992. Engel was named UWM Scholar Athlete two years and made the Dean's List four semesters.
