Banks was a two-year forward/midfield star on the men's soccer team and was co-captain his senior year. He had come to UWM from UW-Parkside, where he earned All- American honors.
A Milwaukee Custer High School graduate, Banks was the first ever-Wisconsin high school player to receive All-America status and was two-time All-WISL selection and All-Mideast selection at UWM. He was a member of the 1985 National Sports Festival North Squad and a 1986 member of the Collegiate All-Star Team that represented the U.S. in Miami Cup
Banks went on to play for the U.S. National Team in the 1987 Pan American Games, the 1987 World University Games and the 1990 World Cup. He also played for the Milwaukee Wave.
