Launder helped organize and played on the UWM soccer club team in the early 1970's that led to the formation of the varsity team in 1973. He played midfielder and goalkeeper in 1973 and was an assistant coach from 1974-78.

Launder then moved to the University of Wisconsin, where he served as an assistant coach for two years and the head coach for 15 years. He never had a losing season with the Badgers. He was Wisconsin State Coach of the Year, Big Ten Coach of the Year two times and NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year three times. In 1995 he earned National Coach of the Year honors when he led the Badgers to the national championship. That team set an NCAA Tournament record by tallying five shutouts on their way to the championship. In 1997 he took over the program at the University of Dayton and immediately led the Flyers to back-to-back Atlantic 10 championships.
