Gunville won nine letters from Milwaukee State Teachers College in track, basketball and football between 1936 and 1939. He was the state conference pole vault champ in 1939 and won the Coach's Award in football as the most improved player that same year. Gunville was also president of the Commonwealth (student government) in 1938-39.
