Kopecky received acclaim for starring in both wrestling and tennis at UWM, where he was a member of the first graduating class. He not only captained the 1956 and '57 tennis team obtaining four letters, but also served as a model of endurance, winning 55 of 62 matches and never missing a match. He won consecutive AAU titles and twice was runner-up in the state college doubles championship. Before obtaining his Bachelor's of science degree in 1957, he was a member of student government and the honorary science fraternity. He received his master's degree at Madison and then taught science and coached at Riverside and Marshall. The Marshall team won 42 straight duals and three city championships. He left coaching to go into school administration and served as principal at Milwaukee South Division High School.
