Dietrich earned four letters in basketball and two in baseball at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was named team captain his final season on the baseball team. Majoring in social studies for secondary education, Dietrich was elected Kappa Delta Pi, honorary educational fraternity, and Phi Alpha Theta, honorary history fraternity. Upon graduation, Dietrich went on to become a basketball coach in the Manitowoc area, first as an assistant at Manitowoc Lincoln and then as the head coach. In 1964, he took his team to the state tournament and won the consolation championship, receiving a citation from the Wisconsin State Legislature and Certificate of Merit from the city of Manitowoc for recognition of contributions to the progress and growth of the community.
