Ernst became only the third Milwaukee State Teachers College athlete to win nine varsity letters when he graduated in Science in 1933. At that time, only letters were awarded for "major" sports and athletes were allowed to compete for three years rather than four. Ernst played on Coach Herman Kluge's football teams in 1930, '31 and '32. He played forward/center on the 1931, '32 and '33 basketball teams and competed in the high jump and pole vault on the track team those same years. Ernst set the state record at the time in the high jump at 6'1". Ernst taught in Waukesha at the South Division for 25 years. He also served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
