A four-year letterwinner in football, Barnett set the UWM single-season rushing record in 1971 with 733 yards, breaking a record that had been established in 1949. In 1972, Barnett was named to the Outstanding College Athletics of America Hall of Fame. After graduation from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, he had a free agent tryout with the Green Bay Packers. Barnett played on several football teams and in 1982 was on the Miller High Life All-American touch football team.
