Gengler played shortstop for UWM, earning four letters, and captained the 1962 baseball squad. A holder of all-time marks for most runs scored, most walks and most stolen bases during his stay from 1959-63, he led UWM in many offensive individual departments and was the mainstay performer of the infield. After graduation in 1963, he continued to excel in baseball. His baseball knowledge earned him the Wisconsin High School Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year honor in 1975 and 1977 after Brown Deer won the state summer baseball championships those two years.
