McBride was Most Valuable Athlete on the cross country team in 1973, 1974 and 1975 and captained the team in 1974 and 1975. He was the Most Valuable Athlete of the track team in 1976. He set nine individual and three school records ranging from the mile to the 10,000-meter run throughout his career. McBride also won the Chancellor's Award in 1976.
