Benson's Baker Field House one-mile record stood from 1949 to 1961. He received four letters in track and was the captain of the 1949 team. He was the conference one and two mile champion in 1947-49. Benson also lettered two years in football and was a running back and defensive back on the 1948 conference championship team. He graduated in the "Honor Ten" and was the president of his junior class. After graduation, Benson was an assistant football coach and head track and cross country coach for many years. In 1979, he was recognized for his 28 years of coaching in the Wauwatosa school system.
