Peterson was one of the best track and cross country runners ever to participate at UWM. Peterson was a two-time NCAA All-American in the 800 meters, qualifying for nationals three times, finishing as high as sixth in the nation in for coach Pete Corfeld. Peterson also excelled in non-collegiate meets, placing third in the 800 at the USA Track and Field Championships in 1998 in a time of 1:48.37.
He also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800 in 1996. Plus, Peterson holds indoor records in the 600 meters (1:18.63), 800 meters (1:48.06), 1000 meters (2:23.87) and the distance medley relay (10:02.10). In fact, Peterson ran the fourth-fastest time in the nation in the 600 in 1997 and the sixth-fastest time in the nation in the 1000 in 1998.
Peterson, who lettered four times in both track and cross country from 1994-1999 and served as a team captain for three seasons, graduated form UWM in 1999 with a bachelor of science in kinesiology.
