An All-America selection on the UWM swimming team, Coan broke eight school records and two national records. In 1985, she set the national meet 200-yard backstroke record, took second in the 100-yard back, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. In 1986, she set the national record in the 100-yard back and the 200-yard medley relay and took second in two events and third in one. Coan earned All-America honors in eight events that year and then took second in three events and earned honors in seven in 1987.
