Zehms became the first-ever NCAA qualifier for UWM in cross country in 1995 before racing to an 89th-place finish among 178 competitors. He also won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Cross Country title in 1995. He is still the school-record holder for the 10,000 meters in track and held the record for the indoor 3,000 meters through 2000. His indoor mile time ranks in the top 10 in school history. Plus, he held the school record in the 5,000 and was part of the school-record mile relay team.
Zehms, who since leaving UWM went on to medical school and become an orthopedic resident, graduated Magna Cum Laude from UWM and won the school's Herman Kluge Award, given annually to the best male and female senior student-athletes.
