Murphy became the only athlete from UWM to win an individual NCAA Championship in 1963. At Chicago, Murphy won the NCAA Small College hammer throw. He lettered eight times in track and cross country and established school marks in eight categories including the decathlon. His coach, John Tierney, called Brian a track team in himself. He holds records for most points in a meet, season and career.
