Karpowitz made All-Conference in football three times at the Milwaukee State Teachers College. He won the Otto Borchert Trophy for long distance swimming from the YMCA in 1926 and was the municipal champion in both 1925 and 1926. In winter, he led the Milwaukee Athletic Club and others to ice hockey championships. After MSTC, he gained his masters degree. Karpowitz retired in 1976 after more than 30 years of teaching.
