DETROIT, Mich. - The Milwaukee men's basketball team spent the early afternoon of its day off in between games in the state of Michigan giving back, helping prepare sandwiches for the Detroit Salvation Army "Bed & Bread" Program.
As part of the Horizon League Community Outreach Overview in conjunction with Olympia Entertainment and "Motor City Madness", teams take part in giving back to the local community.
The players, coaches and staff joined forces to assemble over 2,000 sandwiches in their allotted time, which go out to the homeless population in the Detroit area. According to Chef Michael Block, who runs the Harbor Light Salvation Army program, its five food trucks go out three times daily to serve between 3,000 and 4,000 meals a day.
The total for each year reaches over 1.3 million total meals, using over a ton of lunch meat every week.
