Women’s Basketball Gives Back During Detroit Trip

Team spends off day with local Boys & Girls Club

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Milwaukee women's basketball team spent time on its day off last week giving back to the Detroit community, volunteering at a local Boys & Girls Club.

The team, coaches and staff played basketball at the local center with a group of over 50 children of all ages.

"I think this is really awesome," Milwaukee senior Christina Wakeman said. "We do a lot in the Milwaukee community working with youth, especially, because we want them to grow up and excel. Being able to come to Detroit, where (the Horizon League) is hosting the whole tournament with the men's and women's teams, and get them excited about basketball in their community is awesome. Just to expose them to such a positive experience means a lot to us."

Added Oakland County Boys & Girls Club Director Lekita Jones, "You can do anything you put your mind to. And to not listen to the naysayers that say you can't do it. These women show proof that you can do it. It's a really good message and it boosts up their self esteem, as well."

According to its website, the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan has proved high quality programs for young persons in the community. Today, they serve over 15,000 children and young adults every year through many programs and events.
