Women's Basketball Knocks Off Green Bay

Kostowicz scores 1,000th career point in win

MILWAUKEE – All five starters scored in double figures as the Milwaukee women's basketball team pulled off a big 72-60 win over in-state rival Green Bay Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee (18-8, 10-5 Horizon) shot a season-best 58.1 percent from the floor and stymied the Green Bay (21-5, 12-3 Horizon) offense to just 34.5 shooting.

"I am really proud of our team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "When you go on the road and lose a game by 42 points, you just don't know how your team is going to respond to the next opportunity you have to play them.

"I really loved our mentality in practice this week. We came in with a lot of confidence. The fact that we were playing at home and we know we can shoot a little bit better here. But, we came in with almost a ruthless mentality that we were going to score in the paint and we weren't going to make it a three-point shoot out.

"I'm just really proud of our team. Our upperclassmen stepped up and even our bench, who didn't get in the game a whole lot – they were just really encouraging the whole way through."

Alexis Lindstrom led all scorers with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc.

Steph Kostowicz stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal.

Sierra Ford-Washington added 12 points to go with six rebounds and four assists.

Jenny Lindner had another 13 points, and Bailey Farley also had a big night with 11 points. Both players also added four rebounds and four assists in the big Panther win.

Jordyn Swan also provided a big spark with five points off the bench, all in the second half.

Up by three with just under three and a half minutes to play, Milwaukee never panicked. The Panthers calmly worked the offense and got the look they wanted for a layup by Lindner to put them up 63-58 with 3:02 left.

After a pair of GB free throws, Milwaukee answered right back with a pair of free throws from Lindstrom.

The Phoenix got off a pair of contested shots before Ford-Washington hauled in the rebound, was fouled and made both of her free throws and the crowd could sense the big win.

UWM would add another five points from the line, all while continuing to force contested shots for Green Bay – holding the Phoenix without a field goal for the final 3:25 of the game.

Milwaukee came out of the gates full of confidence, scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the contest. Lindner and Kostowicz each made nice moves down low for early layups, while Lindstrom and Lindner drilled a pair of threes to start the game out hot.

Green Bay responded and held a 17-16 edge at the end of one quarter.

The Phoenix carried momentum early into quarter number two, using a 9-0 run to span both quarters and led 28-20 with 5:52 left in the half. UWM responded in a big way, starting with a three ball from Farley. Ford-Washington and Lindner each had a bucket to cut the deficit to one before a pair of free throws from Kostowicz capped the 9-0 run of their own for a 29-28 lead.

The first of those two from the charity stripe also marked a milestone for Kostowicz, becoming just the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points in their Panther career. For Kostowicz, that mark comes in game number 79 of her career.

"This was a fun game to (achieve that) in. I'm glad it was this one," Kostowicz said. "But, I'm very lucky to have the teammates around me that I do."

A layup by Kostowicz just before the buzzer gave Milwaukee a 33-32 lead heading into halftime.

After the break, the Panthers continued to hit big shots at crucial moments.

Lindstrom gave Milwaukee a 41-40 lead midway through the third. After Green Bay reclaimed the lead off a jumper, Farley drilled a three of her own to make it 44-42 with 3:21 remaining. After a short scoring draught, Jordyn Swan came off the bench a nailed another Panther three pointer before a jumper from Swan just inside the arc to give UWM a 52-48 lead after three complete.

From there, the Panther defense buckled down, limiting Green bay to just 22.2 percent (4-18) shooting in the final quarter to pull off the big win.

"This is the best defensive game we've played all season," Rechlicz said. "It's something that we've really been struggling at is the defensive side, and we put in a new defense this week and our team really bought into it. That was the biggest part about it. We said 'You're going to make a lot of mistakes while doing it, because it is new, but just continue to communicate, continue to play with the energy we need to be successful and find a way to win.' And our team did that."

Milwaukee had 20 assists for the second-straight game and the third time this season. The Panthers claimed a big edge in points in the paint, 28-10, while Green Bay finished with a slight edge in the rebounding category; 30-27.

Additionally, the Panthers broke league record for consecutive games with a made three pointer Friday after now connecting on at least one triple for 447 straight contests. That tops Loyola's former mark of 446 that was halted five years ago. Milwaukee's last game without a three came on Nov. 26, 2002 at Marquette.

UWM closes out the home portion of its schedule on Monday night with a 7 pm contest against Valparaiso. That game – televised live on Spectrum Sports – will also be senior night, with Milwaukee's four seniors recognized prior to tip off.
