Farley’s Career Game Propels Panthers Past Vikings

Panthers dish out season-best 21 assists

MILWAUKEEBailey Farley poured in a career-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting to help lead the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 76-72 victory of Cleveland State Saturday afternoon in front of 895 inside the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee (17-8, 9-5 Horizon) used a 17-5 run early in the third quarter to turn an 11-point deficit into a one-point lead and then made some clutch shots down the stretch for the big win.

"This was a team victory through and through," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Our team just fought with so much heart. To start the second half we were down by 10 and we have no quit. We just have a mentality that we can play with anybody and that we're never going to give up. I'm really proud of the effort that we gave and there were so many great individual performances that we can really build on as we move into the Green Bay game on Friday."

As a team, UWM had a season-high 21 assists and tied its season best with 14 made three pointers.

Farley had a career game, netting 22 points – five better than her previous best – on 8-of-12 shooting, including going 5-of-8 from behind the arc. The junior also hauled in six rebounds and had three assists and one steal in 32 minutes.

"She (Farley) was the player of the game. By far," Rechlicz said. "I'm not sure were the motivation came from. I loved how she played today. I know her mom was honored as a breast cancer survivor prior to the game, which was great. Her whole family was here.

"I couldn't be more proud of who she is as a player and what she's doing for this team right now. She's that missing piece that we need to be successful."

Jenny Lindner led all scorers with 25 points, also going 8-for-12 from the floor, while adding six free throws, four assists and one block.

Alexis Lindstrom also hit some big shots, finishing with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from deep to go with four assists of her own.

Steph Kostowicz had an uncharacteristically cold day from the floor but still finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while also dishing out four assists. Sierra Ford-Washington also chipped in with seven rebounds and four more assists.

"Unselfishness. It's a mentality that it doesn't have to be done with one person," Rechlicz said. "We have so many great scorers out on the court. Sierra and Steph, they had an off game, but they were also focused on. They always had two or three people around them when they were around the basket, but each of them had four assists.

"It's not about how many they score, it's about winning the game and that's the mark of a really good team."

Cleveland State's guard duo of Ashanti Abshaw and Khayla Livingston combined for 45 points for the Vikings (12-13, 7-7 Horizon) in the tight game.

Milwaukee started the game out on fire, hitting back-to-back threes to start the game and jumping out to a 19-12 lead with just 1:33 to play in the opening quarter.

Cleveland State was up to the task though, and ended the first frame on an 8-0 to take a 20-19 edge after the first 10 minutes.

The Vikings then shot 64 percent from the floor and held a 37-32 lead at the break.

Coming out of halftime, CSU added to its lead and went up 43-32 just one minute into the second half.

From there, the Panthers went on its big run. Kostowicz started it with a free throw before three-straight UWM layups to make it 43-39. Abshaw drilled one of her six threes, but Milwaukee continued to keep coming with back-to-back threes from Lindstrom and Lindner to cut the lead to just one. After a CSU bucket, Lindstrom again hit a three ball and made her free throw for a four-point play to make it 49-48 with 4:20 to play.

It was a tight game from there.

Tied at 63 with 5:50 to play, Farley stepped up with a basket down low to give Milwaukee the slight edge before another three from Lindstrom for a five-point edge.

CSU cut the lead to 70-69 with 1:31 left on the clock before Farley was left wide open at the top of the key, knocking down a huge three with just over one minute left to all but ice the game.

From there, the Panther defense did its job and Milwaukee hit three of four free throws to create some separation from the Vikings in the league standings.

"What I'm most proud of is, in the fourth quarter we held them to 37 percent (shooting)," Rechlicz said. "We have been preaching defense and they're a great shooting team. They hit some shots with hands in their faces numerous times, but we really did a good job that fourth quarter so that we could win the game."

Milwaukee once again held a big rebounding edge Saturday, finishing with 37 boards and limiting Cleveland State to just 23.

Saturday's game was the team's Pink Out game, with the Panthers wearing special pink jerseys. It also was alumni day, with a large contingent of former Panthers on hand for the big game.

Up next, the Panthers continue their four-game home stand with a game next Friday against Green Bay from the Klotsche Center at 7 pm.
