Kostowicz Again Named Preseason First Team All-League

Panthers picked fourth heading into the season

MILWAUKEE – Senior Steph Kostowicz of the Milwaukee women's basketball team was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team for the second straight year in the league's annual preseason polling of the league head coaches, sports information directors and media. The all-league squads and preseason poll were released Friday on the league website, with the Panthers picked right near the top at fourth as a team.

The Panthers once again enter the season with high hopes after a tremendous showing one year ago. Last year's team earned its second consecutive postseason appearance – a first in program history – advancing all the way to the WBI semifinals.

Kostowicz was once again a big part of that success, leading the team in points (15.3/game), rebounds (8.2/game), field goal percentage (.526) and blocks (42).

As a whole, the Panthers once again return the majority of last year's successful squad that tied the school record with 22 wins, including over two-thirds of its scoring from a year ago.

Defending league champ Green Bay once again topped the preseason poll with 21 of the possible first-place votes and 246 total points.

Wright State – which also tied for last year's regular-season title – was picked second and grabbed the other four first-place votes, tallying 204 overall points. Raider senior Chelsea Welch was tabbed the 2017-18 preseason player of the year.

The Panthers were then in a group of three right on the heels of last year's champs. Oakland was voted third with 139 points, with Milwaukee right behind at 129. Detroit Mercy was picked fifth with 126 points.

Cleveland State came in sixth at 117, followed by league newcomer IUPUI (106), Youngstown State (93), Northern Kentucky (59) and UIC (31).

UWM is just under one month away from its first contest of the year – a home exhibition scheduled for 2 pm Sunday, Nov. 5.
