Milwaukee Notches Comeback Win At Valpo

Panthers hit season-high 14 threes

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Milwaukee women's basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit at the half and hit a season-high 14 three-pointers in an 85-74 win over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon from the ARC.

Milwaukee (11-4, 3-1 Horizon) finished the game on an 8-0 run and limited the Crusaders (5-10, 0-4 Horizon) to just 3-for-16 shooting in to the final quarter for the big road win.

"A lot of credit to Valpo," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "They have such great post presence. At the beginning, our scout was to make sure they didn't get touches…At halftime, we made the adjustment and talked to Steph (Kostowicz) and Lizzie (Odegard) that, when they got their opportunities, to go one-on-one in the post. That put us in a position where we could spread the court a little bit more and that really helped us contain..

"We played heads-up basketball today, and the second half was exactly how we want to play defense at Milwaukee."

Steph Kostowicz led all players with 29 points in just 28 minutes after sitting much of the first quarter with early foul trouble. Kostowicz also collected eight rebounds.

Jenny Lindner notched her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, with all of her points coming in the second half.

Alexis Lindstrom hit four three-pointers for the third-straight game and finished with 12 points, while Lizzie Odegard added 11 off the bench.

Dani Franklin led the way for Valpo with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

With the game tied at 63-63 entering the fourth, the Panthers took their game to another level in the clutch moments. Lindstrom started things with a big three followed by a Lindner jumper to quickly grab a five-point edge. After VU clawed back, Milwaukee once again countered with seven-straight by Kostowicz and another three by Lindstrom to build its first cushion of the game at 76-70 with just 3:08 remaining.

From there, UWM salted the game away from the free-throw line – going 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the final 10 minutes to seal the come-from-behind road win.

In the game's early going, Milwaukee couldn't quite get its interior game going. So, they turned to their sharp shooters and had incredible results. In fact, the Panthers scored 21 points in the first quarter – all of which coming from behind the arc as the team shot 7-13 from long range to finish the first tied at 21-21.

Despite being able to get their post game going in quarter number two, Milwaukee trailed 44-36 at the half.

UWM responded right out of the gates of the second half, with Ford-Washington, Kostowicz and Farley combining quickly erase Valpo's lead and tie the game at 44-all just 2:39 into the half.

From there, the two teams traded blows until Milwaukee's decisive showing in the game's final quarter.

For the game, UWM went 21-26 from the free-throw line to up their standing as the sixth-best free-throw shooting team in the country. The Panthers also finished Saturday's game with 17 assists on their 25-made field goals, including a season-high seven from Ford-Washington.

Up next, Milwaukee returns home to start a three-game homestand this Wednesday, hosting Oakland at 7 pm from the Klotsche Center.
