Milwaukee Notches Another Road Win At YSU

Panthers survive late push from Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Milwaukee women's basketball team led nearly the entire way in a 78-74 win over Youngstown State from the Beeghly Center Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (15-6, 7-3 Horizon) led by as many as 12 points late in the game only to see YSU (7-14, 3-7 Horizon) get red-hot from behind the arc to make it close before Milwaukee closed the game out making 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute to clinch the win.

"I was really proud of how we played at the end," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "They (Youngstown State) are a great shooting team. We knew that coming in that they could hit deep threes and the ball was going in for them at the end of the game, which put us in a little bit of a bad position because they were chipping away.

"It's something for us to work on and improve. You never want to see a double-digit lead dwindle down to four late in a game, but I'm very proud of our team for getting this win."

Steph Kostowicz had a big game with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. The junior also recorded a season-high six blocks – tying her own mark for the second-most in a single game in school history.

Jenny Lindner – limited to just two points in the first half due to foul trouble – finished with 20 points on 7-8 shooting and seven boards. Sierra Ford-Washington added another 18 points and eight rebounds, while Bailey Farley also was big with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Alison Smolinski finished with a team-high 20 points for YSU on 5-of-10 shooting from three for the game.

Milwaukee won the opening tip and got the scoring started on a layup by Kostowicz. The Panthers held that lead until the 7:47 mark in the second quarter when YSU claimed a 21-20 edge in what proved to be its only lead of the game.

From there, the Panthers went on a tear. Ford-Washington answered right back with a fast-break basket to start a 13-0 run for UWM. Kostowicz hit a big three with 2:44 left and another Ford-Washington jumper made it 33-21 with 1:45 to play in the half.

Youngstown State tried to chip away but Milwaukee held the lead the rest of the way and reestablished a 12-point cushion on a layup by Kelsey Cunningham with 3:39 remaining in the game.

From there, YSU caught fire.

The Penguins next three baskets all from behind the arc and with 47 seconds left the Panther lead was suddenly just five at 71-66. Another bomb from Melinda Trimmer with just eight seconds remaining cut the lead to just two at 76-74, but Ford-Washington hit both of her free throws and the Panthers claimed yet another big win away from home.

Milwaukee won the rebounding battle, 40-36, finished the game shooting 47.4 percent from the floor.

Up next, the Panthers close out their five-game road trip with a pair of games in the state of Michigan, starting Thursday at Detroit Mercy.
