Records Continue To Fall For Milwaukee Track & Field

Pozolinski brothers, Petrie continue meteoric run for Panthers

Louisville, Ky. – Silas Petrie and Brett Pozolinski each broke a school record, Nate Pozolinski took down a former Olympic silver medalist and the Milwaukee men's track and field team continued its outstanding outdoor season with yet another solid performance Saturday at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on the campus of Louisville.

"This was just another awesome day for our program," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Anytime you have multiple records broken on one day, that's a big deal. You can tell the team is feeling the momentum heading toward the league championships. It's a great feeling to see them setting themselves up for various events.

"All of this success wouldn't be possible without our assistant coaches. Eric (Kramer) did a great job sharpening up the events he coaches. Joe (Brunner) once again is getting big performances out of the young group of throwers, and Katlin (Genthe) with the vaulters, Garrett (Huyler) with the high jumps and Jake (Reilly) with the distance crew. What you see in the results from today isn't just for the student-athletes who competed, but it's also a testament to what those coaches do every day with their events."

Brett Pozolinski once again broke the school high jump record, this time clearing 2.19m (7-2 ¼) to take down his own previous record by nearly a full inch. That height also won the meet – his fourth win in six competitions this season – and is now ranked tied for 13th in the nation.

Back in Wisconsin at the St. Norbert Invitational, Silas Petrie set a new school record of his own. The junior topped the very deep field with an outstanding hammer throw toss of 59.91m (196-7), taking down Nick Wichert's previous record of 59.25m (194-5) set back in 2007.

Nate Pozolinski continued to stake his claim as one of the top hurdlers in the nation. The junior not only won the prelims with a new PR time of 13.90, but then blew that mark and the field out of the water with an eye-popping time of 13.66 in finals. That time is second in school history only to former All American Durell Busby and now sits ninth in the entire nation. Not only did Pozolinski crush the collegiate competition in that event, but he also took down former USA Olympic silver medalist David Payne.

Records continued to fall in the 400m hurdles. First, Shawn Bohler moved into ninth in program history with a PR run of 54.18 seconds for third overall on the day. Right behind was classmate Taylor Koss at 54.31. Koss' time equals a new collegiate top mark in the deaf track and field record book. Both times also stand in the top three in the conference standings.

A pair of Panthers moved up on the all time top-10 list in the 100m. One week after posting a new PR of 10.72, Weston Guilfoyle continued to lower that time, clocking in at 10.69 on Saturday for fifth in school history. Will Sutton was close behind with an impressive PR time of 10.83, moving him into 10th in UWM history.

Sutton also did well in triple jump with a new PR leap of 12.65m (41-6), good for sixth on the day.

After missing the last month with an injury, Marquis Johnson made a very successful return to the track Saturday. The senior won the 400m sprint with an incredible time of 47.34 – a season best and the second-fastest in the league this season. Davontae Johnson (49.14) and Kyle Becker (49.56) both also posted season bests in the event on the day.

M. Johnson also came in second overall in the 200m with a solid time of 21.50, just shy of his season best.

Noah Meeteer continued his rise to the top in pole vault. The freshman cleared a new PR height of 4.51m (14-9 ½), tied for fourth on the day. That height also is just shy of the all-time top-10 list in school history and is just shy of the top spot in the conference this season.

As they have done seemingly all season, Bohler and Noah Conrad took the top two spots in javelin. Bohler just missed his PR by a mere one centimeter with an impressive throw of 56.13m (184-1) for the win. Meanwhile, Conrad came in second with a solid mark of 54.99m (180-5).

The Panthers also put together one of the top performances on the day in the 4x100m relay. Aaron Parks, D. Johnson, Guilfoyle and N. Pozolinski teamed up for a runner-up finish with a season-best time of 41.15 – the second-best in the conference this year.

In other throwing events at St. Norbert, Sam Robinson took second overall with a solid toss of 15.24m (50-0), while Miles Kilpin was right behind at 14.67m (48-1 ¾) for third. Marcus Matsche (14.45m), Petrie (14.43m) and Peter Andrew (14.20m) all also finished in the top-seven as Milwaukee flexed its muscle in the event.

UWM also was dominant in the discus throw. Petrie once again took first with a solid throw of 48.86m (160-4), while Kilpin again was right behind for second at 46.63m (153-0). Andrew rounded out the top five with a solid throw of 42.59m (139-9).

Up next, Milwaukee closes out the regular season once again splitting the team between a pair of meets. Part of the squad will head to the historic Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, with the rest of the team heading to Whitewater, Wis. for the Drake Alternative on Saturday.
