Panthers complete sweep of Wright State

MILWAUKEE – Sierra Ford-Washington scored a season-high 26 points to go with her nine rebounds to lead the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 68-57 win over Wright State Saturday from inside the Klotsche Center.

The win is another big one for the Panthers (17-10, 11-5 Horizon), who now claim sole possession of second place in the league standings with just two games left in the regular season.

The 17 regular season wins and the 11 league W's mark the most for the team since the 2007-08 team finished the year 17-14 overall and 11-7 in league play.

"I'm just proud," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said after the win. "We use that word a lot – Panther pride. It's something that we say in our huddles a lot.

"Our team is fighting for something. They're fighting to represent our university and that makes me really proud as a coach.

"I'm very confident in who we are right now. I like the edge that we have to us and I know our team is extremely focused, which is what it's going to take in order to be successful the rest of the way."

Sydney Howard also came up big on Saturday. The lone senior scored 15 points on senior day, closing out her home career in style.

"She's our leader; she's our energy. Everything we do revolves around Syd," Rechlicz said. "She's the one that challenges us in practice and challenges us in games. She's really been consistent for us all year."

Ford-Washington had yet another big game for Milwaukee. One game after notching 24 points and six rebounds, the junior outdid herself with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists, with her point and assist totals equaling season highs.

Jenny Lindner also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points to go with her nine rebounds.

After a few minutes of feeling each other out, the Panthers quickly pounced on Wright State with a big run early. Down 7-5, Ford-Washington and Lindner hit back-to-back threes, followed by a Kostowicz lay in to force an early timeout by WSU. Emma Roenneburg then closed out the run with a bucket to make it a 10-0 Milwaukee spurt.

That carried over in the second, where the Panthers used a 15-0 run to start the quarter and really established themselves as the aggressors in this one.

Kostowicz and Ford-Washington each scored a basket to get it going before a pair of triples by Alexis Lindstrom and Howard on consecutive possessions made it 27-13 UWM. Lindstrom would add another jumper followed by another Ford-Washington stretched the lead to 32-13 just 12:40 into the game.

From there on out, Milwaukee never let Wright State into the game, leading by as many as 23 (60-37) in this one before pulling out the big win.

UWM outrebounded the Raiders, 49-44, marking the second time this season they have do so against one of the best rebounding teams in the country.

This also marks the first season sweep over WSU for Milwaukee since the 2004-05 season.
