Panthers Notch Sixth-Straight Win

13-0 fourth-quarter run sparks road win

NORMAL, Ill. – A 13-0 run early in the fourth quarter was the key for the Milwaukee women's basketball team in a 68-60 win on the road at Illinois State Wednesday night from Redbird Arena.

The win is the sixth-straight for Milwaukee (7-1), which is now off to its best start in its Division-I history.

"I thought our team was resilient tonight, especially in the second half," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "At half time, we made quite a few adjustments as to how we were playing. It was nice to see our senior leadership come out of the locker room and execute those changes."

Alexis Lindstrom led all scorers with 14 points Wednesday, getting going from behind the arc early before hitting some big mid-range shots late.

Steph Kostowicz recorded her fifth double-double of the young season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Jenny Lindner once again with big from the line, going a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe as part of her 12 points, while Lizzie Odegard scored 10 off the bench.

Sierra Ford-Washington was also a key part in this one with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Milwaukee also tied its season high with 12 steals and forced 25 Redbird (3-5) turnovers.

Much like Saturday against North Dakota State, Milwaukee found itself in a grind-it-out style game and trailed by one going into the break at 32-31.

UWM once again made some key adjustments out of the break, going to the line 10 times in the third period alone, connecting on nine and getting a huge three pointer from Jaye Two Bears for a 49-46 lead after three quarters.

After the game was tied at 51-51, the Panthers turned things up with the 13-0 run. Lindstrom got things going with a jumper followed by a steal from Odegard and a fast-break layup by Alyssa Fischer to quickly give Milwaukee a four-point lead. Lindner and Ford-Washington both added buckets before a steal and layup by Kostowicz to give the Panthers a 64-51 lead with just 2:31 left.

Illinois State refused to go away quietly, but the Panthers hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the game for their sixth-straight win.

"Early in the game, we were playing too much one-on-one basketball. It caused us some travel turnovers and it just put us in some really bad positions," Rechlicz said. "That's one of the adjustments we made at halftime, to just drive it and look opposite. I think Sierra Ford-Washington was a huge part of that for us. She had six assists and one turnover – that's a really big game as a senior. Coming in, her shot hasn't been falling as much, so for her to get into the paint and find that weak-side person was really big for us."

Milwaukee finished the game with a season-low shooting of 36.7 percent. Despite the cold shooting, UWM still finished with impressive edges in both points off turnovers (25-12), second-chance points (15-6) and fast-break point (10-2).

The Panthers now return home to host Big Ten foe Northwestern Sunday at noon from the Klotsche Center. Sunday's game also is a Ronald McDonald House Game, with fans can buy one ticket and get a second free with a toy donation.
