Total Team Effort Powers Panthers Past Norse

Kostowicz notches eighth double-double of the season

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team used a 32-8 run that spanned over 15 minutes to build an insurmountable lead on its way to a 72-44 win over Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

A total of five players scored in double figures for Milwaukee (9-4, 1-1 Horizon) as UWM shot over 50 percent from the floor nearly the whole game and tied its season high with 12 made three pointers.

Meanwhile, the Panther defense held NKU (4-10, 0-2 Horizon) to just three points in the entire second quarter before cruising to the win.

"It was great to bounce back after how we played on Thursday," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I was really impressed with our players. Our team just came out and we were really resilient and just moved the basketball from one side of the court to the other. Our offense was really clicking.

"But, I really believe the reason we won by so much was our defense. It was back to what we want in the Milwaukee style."

Steph Kostowicz led all players with 19 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes for her league-leading eighth double-double of the season.

Jenny Lindner and Alexis Lindstrom each scored 12 for the Panthers, with both going 4-5 from the field. Bailey Farley added another 10, while Jordyn Swan came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds.

Kasey Uetrecht led the way for Northern Kentucky with 19 points.

UWM started the game on fire, with two quick baskets by Kostowicz before a three from Farley. After NKU kept things close early at 11-6 at the 5:05 mark, Milwaukee went on its big run to blow the game open.

Lindstrom started things with one of her four three-pointers, followed by six-straight from Kostowicz.

The Panthers then shifted their attack from inside to the perimeter in the second quarter, again started by a Lindstrom three. Kostowicz got in on the action with her seventh triple of the season before back-to-back bombs from Swan. Lindstrom hit another three and suddenly it was 39-13 UWM with 2:30 left in the half.

Kelsey Cunningham netted a layup just before the break and Milwaukee carried a 41-14 lead into the locker room, while connecting on over 50 percent of its shots both from the floor and behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

UWM continued its hot shooting in the third quarter, with Lindner and Farley both drilling threes in the early going to extend the lead to 49-16.

A lay in by Akaylah Hayes stretched the Panther lead to 35 early in the fourth before Milwaukee ballooned the score to 72-33 with 4:42 remaining for it's largest lead of the game.

Despite some cold shooting in the fourth quarter, Milwaukee still finished the game connecting on 45 percent of its shot from the floor, including tying a season-high with 12 made three pointers.

The Panthers won every statistical category on the day, including claiming a 41-24 edge on the boards and assisting on 19 of its 26 made field goals.

Additionally, with her first rebound in the game's opening minutes, Kostowicz became just the 24th player in program history to reach 500 rebounds for her career, doing so in just her 66th game played.

Up next, Milwaukee leaves the city limits for the first time in nearly a full month when they head just across the state line for a Thursday evening contest at UIC in Chicago.
