Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fast Start Pushes Marquette Past Milwaukee

Four Panthers score in double figures

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team was within three points with just over five minutes left but couldn't overcome a red-hot Golden Eagles' start in an 85-74 loss to Marquette Sunday afternoon from the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (8-2) came out of the gates at a break-neck pace, scoring 27 points in the first quarter, connecting on 65-percent of their shots in the first 10 minutes before an even game the rest of the way.

"We really struggled in the first quarter adjusting to the pace of the game," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I'm not big on making excuses by any means, but our team is very heavy into finals week right now and I think that showed a little today. And credit to Marquette – they really turned up the jets at the beginning and we struggled to stay with them.

"After that first quarter, we played well. We went back to playing Milwaukee basketball and I was proud of our team. We didn't quit. I think that's something you've seen in a lot of games this year that we have a lot of fight in us. I think that's the mark of a really good team is that, even when you're down, you don't hang your head and you stick together.

"We've got some work to do, but this is a good learning point for us before heading into conference."

Jenny Lindner and Steph Kostowicz each scored 17 to lead Milwaukee in this one, with both also grabbing six rebounds.

Bailey Farley netted a season-high 15 points on 6-11 shooting, while Sierra Ford-Washington stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Natisha Hiedeman led six players in double figures for Marquette with 18 points.

Up by just two at 14-12 midway through the first quarter, MU was able to get its transition game going and raced out to a 27-18 lead at the end of the first.

The Panther offense started clicking more in quarter number two. Lindner started things off with a layup down low, followed by a three from Ford-Washington and a pair of triples from Farley. A lay in by Kostowicz just before half cut the lead to 47-35 heading into the break.

Marquette came out of the break hot, stretching the lead to 17 early in the third before Milwaukee really cranked things up offensively. Farley drained her third three-pointer of the day with 2:32 left in the third to cut the lead to 62-52 before a Kostowicz bucket made it a six-point game just before the end of the third.

A big part of Milwaukee's offensive run was actually its work defensively, holding the Golden Eagles without a field goal for nearly five and a half minutes between the third and fourth quarters.

"Our defense was huge for us during that run," Rechlicz said. "We finally made them play a half-court game. That was what we strived to do all game, but once we finally got some stops it kept them out of their press and allowed us to find our rhythm and our pace. That was the big catalyst in that run."

Lindstrom hit a three at the 7:13 mark to make it a four-point game and Lindner drained her third triple of the game on the next possession to cut the lead to three. A jumper from Lindstrom made it 70-67 Marquette with 6:02 remaining, but that was as close as Milwaukee could get as the Golden Eagles hit their free throws down the stretch in the close game.

Marquette finished the game connecting on over 50-percent of its shots from the floor, including a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. UWM improved as the game went along to finish shooting .412 Sunday, including 10-25 (.400) from behind the arc.

MU also claimed the narrow edge in rebounds, 37-35 – the first time Milwaukee has been out-rebounded all season.

The Panthers will now have 11 days until their next game after the Christmas break, returning to play Dec. 29 when they start conference play with a home game against Wright State at 7 pm from the Klotsche Center.
