Christina Wakeman Named Prestigious Award Nominee

Senior up for 2017 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team

MILWAUKEEChristina Wakeman of the Milwaukee women's basketball team has been named a nominee for the 2017 Allstate Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Good Works Team today, as announced by the WBCA. The esteemed award honors an outstanding group of student-athletes who represent the sport's finest in the areas of community service and leadership among their peers.

"Christina is an amazing individual," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "She is someone who absolutely leads by example. From what she's done with our team, to the volunteering she's spearheaded, not to mention the work she's done in the classroom - she's a truly selfless person. It is definitely well-deserved for her to be named to this prestigious list."

Wakeman has been a leader in all facets at Milwaukee. On the court, she has helped with the turnaround of the Panther program that was 8-22 her first season on campus and made it all the way to the WNIT last year with a 19-13 record and just the third postseason berth in the program's D-I history. Now a senior, Milwaukee is off to a 5-1 start this season - the best start in program history.

In the classroom, the senior forward carries an impressive 3.677 grade point average, including a 3.934 GPA during last year's spring semester.

On top of all that, Wakeman has given her time to countless areas of both the campus and community, including Autism Awareness, University Christian Ministries and the Milwaukee Rescue Mission and Joy House, just to name a few.

Wakeman is one of 97 student-athletes nominated. A total of 10 will be named to the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team in February, and selected student-athletes will be honored at the 2017 WBCA Convention and at the 2017 NCAA Women's Final Four in Dallas, Texas.

"The positive impact that student-athletes are making on college campuses and communities around the world can sometimes go unnoticed," said Thomas Clarkson, president of the west territory for Allstate Insurance Company and a member of the 2017 WBCA Good Works Team selection panel. "Allstate is a proud supporter of NCAA college basketball and takes immense pride in working with the NABC and WBCA to recognize players who continue to make giving back a priority and inspire future generations of athletes."
