Panthers Post Big Results On Big Stage

Marquis Johnson’s 400m time top-30 in the nation

Allendale, Mich. – The Milwaukee men's track and field team had posted another solid day in the books with 15 top-10 finishes at the Mike Lints Open Saturday hosted by Grand Valley State.

"We continued to make progress in all areas today," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "We had some big performances today. We like coming to this meet so we can get on a 300m track and I think our athletes made the most of it. There were a lot of PRs and good results across the board. Now we're gearing up for Notre Dame."

Marquis Johnson headlined the day for the Panthers. The senior just missed a pair of his own school records on the day. Johnson started things out by taking second in the 200m in a blazing time of 21.79, just shy of his own school record of 21.57. Teammates Davontae Johnson (22.38) and Kyle Becker (22.40) were right behind for third and fourth.

Later, M. Johnson followed that up with another remarkable run, taking second in the 400m with a time of 47.38, again just fractions of a second shy of his own school record. Becker came in eighth overall at 49.64.

Johnson's 400m time moves him up in the national rankings to 28th overall and less than half a second shy of a spot in the top-16.

In the 60m, Weston Guilfoyle tied his PR from last weekend with a solid time of 7.03 for sixth overall, while Aaron Parks came in ninth at 7.18 in his first meet as a Panther.

The distance crew picked up right where the sprinters left off.

Caleb Abfall came in fourth overall in the 3000m in 8:31.50 – less than two seconds shy of his PR.

In the 5K, Vince Paikowski led the way. The junior placed fifth on the day in 15:12.92, a full 10 seconds faster than his pervious personal best. Matt Brooks (15:28.11) and Adam Schueller (15:28.39) also did well, taking eighth and ninth.

Defending Horizon League Runner of the Week Gerrit Bruni had another strong showing this week. Bruni came in fifth in the mile, crossing the line at 4:20.87 -10 seconds of his previous PR.

Milwaukee's 4x400 relay team of Reed Schmidt, Terry McMillan, Drew Dueck and Tony Sustachek combined for a strong time of 3:29.09, good for ninth out of 18 on the day.

Brett Pozolinski continued his assault on the competition to start the season, taking second in high jump with a leap of 1.98m (6-6) Saturday.

In triple jump, freshman Scott Hietpas led the way, taking eighth after clearing 12.85m (42-2).

Milwaukee also sent a handful of athletes to the UW-Parkside Green and White Invitational.

The Panthers stole the show in shot put at that meet, taking the top four spot. Peter Andrew came in first at 15.17m with Silas Petrie (14.86m), Miles Kilpin (14.58m) and Marcus Matsche (14.31m) all right behind.

UWM also went 1-2-3 in weight throw. Jamar Manning won the event with a toss of 14.14m, with Andrew (13.95m) and Kilpin (13.54) rounding out the podium.

In pole vault, freshmen Nate Scherer and Noah Meeteer tied for third after both posted new PR heights of 4.20m. Fellow newcomer Garrett Worman was fifth on the day at 3.90m.

Sophomore Will Sutton had a strong showing on the day. The Brookfield native won the long jump competition with a leap of 6.04m and also placed fourth in the 55m dash in 6.85 seconds.

Milwaukee will now prepare for the national Meyo Invitational next weekend hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
