Paulson’s Record Continues Panthers Red-Hot Start

Senior wins 5K in school-record time

Carbondale, Ill. – Marcus Paulson broke a school record to continue a red hot start to the 2015 outdoor season for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee track & field team at the Bill Cornell Spring Class at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex Saturday.

Despite only sending four runners to Saturday's meet, Milwaukee broke yet another school record – the 10^th school record broken by the Panthers in just the ninth week of action this season.

"What a way to start the outdoor season, with a best ever program performance," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Though the temperature was not much high than it was in Wisconsin today, it was close to optimal conditions for long distance racing. These guys were ready for a challenge and they meet it in full stride. This bodes well for the coming weeks."

Paulson stole the headlines by winning the 5000m race with an eye-popping time of 14:31.40 – over a full second ahead of the previous record set back in 2010. Paulson's time was also nearly 20 seconds faster than the next finisher at Saturday's race, giving him a big win to start his outdoor season.

Two other Panthers posted strong outings in Saturday's 5K. Junior Adam Schueller came in 10^th overall at 15:28.41, with sophomore Vince Paikowski right behind at 15:33.69 for 12^th – both just shy of personal records in their first action of the season.

Caleb Abfall also competed in a pair of events for the Black & Gold on the day. The sophomore won the 1500m with a strong season-opening time of 3:59.00. Abfall also came in eighth in the 800m in 2:01.94.

The full Panther squad returns to action next weekend, heading to the EIU Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill. next Friday and Saturday.
