McWhorter, Tiby Earn Second Team All-Horizon League Honors

Panthers place multiple players on first or second teams for first time since 2005-06

MILWAUKEE (March 2, 2015) – Senior Steve McWhorter and junior Matt Tiby were both named Second Team All-Horizon League it was announced this afternoon by the conference office. This marks the first time since the 2005-06 season that the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has placed multiple players on the league's first or second teams. Milwaukee was one of four teams – Green Bay, Cleveland State and Oakland were the others – to have multiple players named to the all-league first or second teams.

McWhorter, who earned All-Horizon League accolades for the first time in his career, had his best season as a collegiate player this year. The 6-foot-2 point guard, who recently wrapped up his second season at Milwaukee after transferring from Indiana State, led the team with 14.2 points, 4.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game to go with 4.7 rebounds per contest.

A leader both on and off the court, McWhorter scored in double figures on 25 occasions in 2014-15 and also notched three double-doubles. McWhorter nearly doubled his scoring average from a season ago (7.8 ppg) and shot 45.4 percent (147-for-324) from the field and 33.9 percent (40-for-118) from three-point range. In Horizon League play, he produced 14.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 5.9 apg and 1.7 spg and his 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio tied for the conference's top mark.

McWhorter scored a career-best 21 points on three occasions this season – versus Oral Roberts, at home against Green Bay and at UIC. He finished his career with a vintage performance in a win at Youngstown State on February 28, totaling 18 points, two rebounds, three blocks, a steal and seven assists, while playing turnover-free basketball.

Tiby also earned All-Horizon League status for the first time in his career after putting up 13.3 ppg and a team-leading 7.8 rpg, which ranked second in the league. The 6-foot-8 forward got off to a slow start but then was as consistently productive as any player in the Horizon League over the final two months of the season and in conference action alone nearly averaged a double-double with 15.8 ppg and 8.7 rpg.

The Panthers' emotional leader scored in double figures in 21 consecutive outings to close out the 2014-15 season for the longest streak by a UWM player since Joah Tucker did so in 27 straight contests in 2005-06. Tiby's eight double-doubles this year are also the most by a Panther in a single-season since Adrian Tigert in 2005-06 (9).

Tiby scored 20 or more points on four occasions including in each of Milwaukee's final two contests of the season. The Preseason Second Team All-Horizon League pick poured in a career-best 24 points in a 61-58 victory at Wright State on February 26, then hung 22 points and 11 rebounds on Youngstown State in an 82-74 win two nights later in the season finale.

McWhorter and Tiby were joined on the All-League Second Team by Juwan Howard, Jr. (Detroit), Corey Petros (Oakland) and Greg Mays (Green Bay).

Keifer Sykes (Green Bay), Kahlil Felder (Oakland), Alec Peters (Valparaiso), Anton Grady (Cleveland State) and Trey Lewis (Cleveland State) were selected to the first team, with Sykes claiming Player of the Year accolades for the second straight season.

Paris Bass (Detroit), Tevonn Walker (Valparaiso), Jalen Hayes (Oakland), Grant Benzinger (Wright State) and Nick Daniels (Oakland) made up the Horizon League All-Freshman Team, while Vashil Fernandez (Valparaiso), Fouse, Dante Williams (Oakland), Grady and Charlie Lee (Cleveland State) were named to the All-Defensive Team.

Jubril Adekoya (Valparaiso) and Bryce Drew (Valparaiso) were tabbed Sixth Man of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively. Bass collected Freshman of the Year honors and Fernandez was pegged Defensive Player of the Year.

Milwaukee finished the 2014-15 season with a 14-16 overall record and posted a two-game improvement from a season ago with a 9-7 Horizon League ledger. Optimism for the 2015-16 campaign is high as the Panthers return everyone but McWhorter and fellow guard Evan Richard next season and will welcome back 2014-15 redshirt Austin Arians, who averaged 11.1 ppg in 2013-14, as well as transfers JayQuan McCloud and Scotty Tyler in addition to Brock Stull and Derek Rongstad, who redshirted the 2014-15 campaign.
