MILWAUKEE - Matt Tiby added his 1,000
th point during a career-high performance of 31 points and 17 rebounds, but Tre Burnette's floater in the lane with 1.2 seconds left in double-overtime helped South Dakota to a 92-91 victory over the Milwaukee men's basketball team Thursday night at UWM Panther Arena.
Â
"Obviously, this is a tough one to swallow, I've just got to be honest," Milwaukee head coach
Rob Jeter said. "But first, you have to give a lot of credit to South Dakota. They came in here from the beginning and really established their game, their tempo, their style. They frustrated us, we were never able to use our size to our advantage."
Â
Tiby became the 26
th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in program history, finishing with those 31 points, including a 13-of-14 showing from the free throw line.
Austin Arians added 16 points and
Akeem Springs just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.
Â
D.J. Davis paced the Coyotes with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Burnette followed up his game-winner by blocking Milwaukee's last-ditch three-quarter court effort at the buzzer.
Â
The game was a thriller, featuring 12 ties and 12 lead changes, including four lead changes alone in the final 50 seconds.
Â
"It's the reason why these games around final exams are so crazy for teams," Jeter said. "We were a step behind on every decision. We made this game really difficult yet had a chance to win, but just couldn't come up with anything clean on the possessions we needed."
Â
Milwaukee found itself down by five late in the second overtime but did not give up. Springs late layup made it 87-84 and after one of two free throws by South Dakota, it was Arians again with a reverse layup to draw the Panthers within a bucket at 88-86. Tiby then drew a charge on the other end, setting the stage for an Arians three-pointer that gave Milwaukee an 89-88 lead with 50 seconds to play.
Â
The Coyotes responded and went ahead yet again, but Tiby had an answer, putting in a jumper in the paint that made it 91-90 with 14 seconds left. UWM played good defense and had the rebound on the ensuing possession, but a travel call gave the visitors one last chance and they capitalized.
Â
The Panthers looked to have won the game at the end of regulation.
Jordan Johnson drove the lane and missed a layup as the shot-clock went off. Springs alertly grabbed the rebound and scored as the horn sounded. However, after a lengthy discussion, it was ruled that an inadvertent whistle came before the play and Milwaukee's last-ditch three-pointer after 0.4 seconds was put back on the clock missed, sending the contest to overtime.
Â
"We are disappointed, but have to figure out a way to pick ourselves up and get ready for finals exams and then ready for last non-conference game and then get into the league," Jeter said.
Â
Milwaukee was down by as many as 13 points in the first half yet found a way to force overtime. In the first extra session, a five-point deficit was quickly erased, capped by back-to-back three-pointers by
JayQuan McCloud that gave the Panthers a 74-73 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Tiby's three-point play with under a minute remaining knotted the game at 78-78 to send it to the second overtime.
Â
The Panthers were uncharacteristically off from the floor in the first half, making around 25 percent of their attempts to trail by double-figures at the half. Milwaukee started ice-cold from three-point range, missing 10 in a row after making two of their first four from distance.
Â
The Coyotes took advantage, helped along by sinking 50 percent of their field goals in the first 20 minutes. A 9-2 scoring spurt made it 30-19 on a layup in transition with 4:28 to play and the lead eventually grew to as many as 13 at 38-25 on triple by D.J. Davis 73 seconds before intermission. A pair of Tiby charity stripe tosses cut it to 38-27 at the half.
Â
The 'Yotes scored the first six points of the contest, making five of their first six shots. But, UWM battled right back, and a Springs three from the wing tied it at 10 at the 16:31 mark. It was tied again at 12-12 on Arian's jumper before UWM hit a cold spell, making just 1-of-8 as the Coyotes went on a 9-3 spurt to lead 21-15.
Â
For the game, UWM finished at 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the floor, breaking the former school record of 41 three-pointers attempted when it finished the night with 42. South Dakota checked in at 47.5 percent (38-of-80) for the game, helped along by an impressive 69.2 percent (9-of-13) showing in the overtime periods.
Â
The Panthers close out the month of December with one final road game, heading to MinneapoÂlis for take on Minnesota next week Wednesday. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. as Milwaukee closes out the 2015 portion of the schedule.
