Panther Comeback Falls Just Short To Denver

Milwaukee goes cold from the floor in the loss

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team made a furious comeback late in the fourth quarter only to come up just short in a 56-49 loss to Denver Monday night from the Klotsche Center.

Down by as many as 10 in the second half and nine with just over four minutes left in the game, UWM (4-4) fought all the way back to within two but couldn't quite get over the hump in the narrow loss to the Pioneers (2-8).

"Going into the game, we knew that Denver was better than what their record showed," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game and it was going to come down to physical toughness. I feel like when some of the teams that have played us more physically tough, we struggle to shoot.

"Every other statistical category we were great in. We out rebounded them, we had more steals, turned the ball over less; we just couldn't put the ball in the basket tonight."

Alexis Lindstrom led the way in scoring for Milwaukee Monday with 12 points, 10 coming in the opening half. Sierra Ford-Washington (11) and Steph Kostowicz (10) also reached double figures in points on the night for UWM.

Freshman Emma Roenneburg also had a strong showing, scoring seven and grabbing 10 rebounds in a season-high 25 minutes off the bench after returning from an injury.

"Emma was excellent tonight. I thought she played with an incredible amount of heart," Rechlicz said. "She really was a leader for us out on the court even as a freshman. She was trying to put the team on her back a little bit, which you don't get to see a lot from freshman. It's definitely nice to have her back."

UWM started the game strong. Kostowicz scored the game's opening basket and Milwaukee never trailing in the opening frame. In fact, the Panthers claimed a 12-5 early edge after an offense burst by Lindstrom. The junior hit a jumper in the paint before draining a pair of threes to open things up.

Denver was able to battle back, however, and the two teams were knotted up at 15 apiece after the first.

Alba Izquierdo started off the second with the first three of her collegiate career to give UWM an 18-15 lead. From there, the flow of the game came to a grinding halt as both teams struggled to score. Lindstrom's layup just before halftime closed the Denver lead to just 30-24 heading into the break.

The Panthers used a 10-4 spurt in the end of the third to close the gap. Kostowicz got it going with a steal and a layup on the other end to make it 40-32. A pair of free throws followed by a three pointer by Ford-Washington brought Milwaukee even closer. Kostowicz closed out the quarter with a layup just before the horn to make it 44-40 with 10 minutes to play.

Despite not scoring a point in the first 6:05 of the fourth, the Panther defense was up to the task. Milwaukee forced two shot clock violations and four steals in that stretch to keep it close.

Down 49-40 with less than four minutes left on the clock, the UWM offense finally got going. Roenneburg drained her first three point attempt of the season with just 3:55 left on the clock to get things going. Four-straight free throws and a Roenneburg layup closed the Pioneer lead to just 51-49 with 1:33 remaining.

Milwaukee couldn't quite find the final basket though on a frustrating night from the floor where it shot just 25.8 percent from the floor.

UWM had a season-low 12 turnovers on the night. Milwaukee also tied a season-high with 17 offensive rebounds on the night.

The Panthers return to the Klotsche Center next Tuesday, Dec. 22 against Marquette in their second-straight Time Warner Cable SportsChannel game. That game is scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
