Panthers Claim Important Win Over UIC

Team hit a season-high .336 for the match

MILWAUKEE – Maggie Dunbar, Sammi Herron and Maddie Williams all posted double-digit kills as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team recorded an important, 3-2 win over UIC Friday night from the Klotsche Center.

UWM (8-19, 6-8 Horizon) came out strong and claimed the first two sets before holding off a furious UIC (12-16, 5-8 Horizon) rally, 25-22, 25-21, 16-25, 19-25, 26-14.

The win was a big one for the Panthers, sliding up into a tie for fifth with Green Bay in the league standings with a half-game lead over UIC following Friday's action.

"This was an important win," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We stressed that this week, but every match has been important. We were under some pressure this week and our team still came out strong and battled through the adversity of this match, I'm proud of them for that.

"This was not an easy win. We started having trouble in (sets) three and four, so coming out in five was not easy. And defending a player like Stephenee Yancy was difficult. She was up in the front row at the end and our players found a way to win that match. I'm very proud of my team for that."

Dunbar led Milwaukee with 22 kills on the night, hitting an outstanding .543 for the match. Herron tallied 17 kills on the night – the most since her 18 in the season opener – hitting .405. Williams also was big on the night with 13 kills with a match-high .550 hitting percentage.

Kayla Price was also instrumental all night long, leading the offense with 53 assists. That marks the eighth time this season the senior has gone over 50 assists for a match. Price also added five kills on the night and moved into a tie for first in program history with her 124th match played - tying her with Julie Schloemer (1992-95) for the record.

Defensively, Myanna Ruiz had 21 digs, while Dunbar added another 14 to lead the way.

Yancy had a night to remember, leading the Flames with 33 kills – the most in the Horizon League this season by a five-kill margin.

As a team, Milwaukee hit a season-best .336 in Friday's win.

The Panthers also tied their second-highest block total on the season Friday with 12.

It was a battle in the first, but Milwaukee slowly and steadily pulled away. A kill by Ruiz made it 21-17 late and one of Dunbar's five kills in the set closed things out for the opening three-point win.

The Panthers kept it rolling to start the second, jumping out to a 6-1 lead after a kill by Jess Kalous. UIC would claw back only to see Milwaukee again continuously pull away. At one point, Maddie Williams had three kills in a row and four consecutive points for the Panthers, building the lead to 14-10. In all, Williams had five kill and Dunbar added another seven to lead UWM to the early 2-0 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth to start the third, tying the match at 11-11 after another kill by Dunbar. From there, the Flames got late, going on a 14-5 run to close things out to draw it to 2-1.

UIC stayed hot in the second, riding Yancy's hot hand and hitting .447 as a team to level it at 2-2.

It was back-and-forth early in the decisive fifth set. The Flames claimed the early lead at 5-3, before Milwaukee sprung back to make tie it at five all and claim its first two-point lead at 11-9 after a kill by Williams. Another kill by Williams brought it to set point at 14-11. The Flames refused to go quietly, tying it up at 14-14. But, Williams had back-to-back kills from there to send the Panthers home with a huge win.

Milwaukee returns to the court Saturday for a 4 p.m. matchup with Valparaiso at the Klotsche Center.
