Seven Players Earn Horizon League Postseason Honors

Blanchard named Defensive Player of the Year

MILWAUKEE - Seven members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team were honored with postseason awards when the league office announced the all-league teams and specialty award winners Monday.

Highlighting the way was sophomore Cassidy Blanchard as the Defensive Player of the Year and Troy Fabiano as the Horizon League Coach of the Year.

Blanchard was joined on the first team by junior Maria Stephans.

The Panthers also had four players named to the second team. Senior Kelsey Holbert, juniors Paige Lincicum and Callie O'Donnell and sophomore Anna Smalley were all recognized for their efforts on the season.

In addition, Kelli Swenson was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team.

Blanchard earns top defensive billing and first-team honors following All-Newcomer status a year ago. She played a major role managing a Milwaukee defensive backline that led the Horizon League with its 0.68 goals-against average and nine shutouts.

Fabiano claims Coach of the Year accolades following in impressive first season at the helm. He quickly turned around a team that won just six games a season ago and was picked to finish eighth in this year's preseason poll. He nearly doubled that win total, with his team at 11-3-3 overall, including an unbeaten 8-0-1 mark in league play that included the regular-season crown.

Stephans one-upped her second-team nod from a year ago, earning first-team status following a campaign where she currently sits 10th in the conference with 13 points and tops with her team-leading seven assists.

Holbert caps her Panther career with all-league honors for the third time in her career. The midfield sparkplug has contributed eight points, including an assist tally of six that stands tied for fourth in the league.

Lincicum has been nothing short of phenomenal in goal, posting a 0.67 goals-against average, .863 save percentage and seven shutouts. She starts the week with a scoreless streak of 615:10, the second-longest in program history.

O'Donnell spent the majority of the season pacing the league in goals, currently sitting tied for second with seven as well as tied for sixth with 15 points.

Smalley has been the leader on offense, currently leading the team with 17 points on the strength of a league-leading eight goals. Her six game-winning goals also easily leads the conference and is one of the highest one-season totals in school history.

Swenson quickly worked her way into the starting lineup on the backline of the defense, starting 13 of the 15 games she has appeared. She also added two goals and two assists on just six shots on the offensive side of the ball.
