SANTA CLARA, Calif. (November 16, 2015) – After helping Milwaukee win the 49
th Annual Cable Car Classic championship, a pair of Panthers were named to the all-tournament team, it was announced today. Junior forward
Austin Arians (Stoughton, Wis./Madison Edgewood) was named Most Valuable Player of the Cable Car Classic, while senior forward
J.J. Panoske (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) joined his teammate on the all-tournament squad.
In fact, an argument could have easily been made for each member of the Milwaukee starting lineup, which also includes
Matt Tiby (13.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg),
Akeem Springs (10.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.7 apg) and
Jordan Johnson (7.7 ppg, 6.7 apg) to have been recognized on the all-tournament team
Arians was the only Milwaukee player to score in double figures in all three games, averaging 15.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while also draining 12 total three-point field goals. The 6-foot-6 sharpshooter scored 20 points, hitting six treys, in the season opener versus Denver, before going for 12 points against Lipscomb and 14 versus Santa Clara. Arians scored all 14 of his points yesterday versus Santa Clara in the second half of the contest as Milwaukee erased an eight-point deficit in the period. Milwaukee is now 19-6 the last 25 times he has scored in double figures.
Panoske's best game of the Cable Car Classic came in Saturday's 71-65 decision over Lipscomb when he tossed in 12 points, collected a career-best 15 rebounds, and added five blocked shots. In the victory over Santa Clara Sunday, he totaled 10 points and four rebounds, while hitting all four of his field goal attempts, including a pair from three-point range, in only 17 minutes of action. Panoske pitched in nine points and five boards in the season opener against Denver November 13.
Cody Wichmann (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) was the recipient of the Kevin O'Connor Inspirational Award, which is presented in honor of the son of the late sportswriter, Dick O'Connor. During the three-game tournament, Wichmann produced 4.7 ppg and 3.3 rpg off the bench.
Joining Arians and Panoske on the Cable Car Classic All-Tournament Team were Nate Engesser (Denver), Marcus Byrd (Denver) and Nathan Moran (Lipscomb). Engesser also collected DJ Frandsen Sixth Man Award accolades.
Milwaukee looks to extend its winning streak when it travels to Notre Dame tomorrow night.
