SANTA CLARA, Calif. (November 15, 2015) –
Visiting Milwaukee (3-0) used a 21-5 second-half run to erase a six-point deficit and take control of the game en route to a 71-65 victory over Santa Clara (0-3) this afternoon at the Cable Car Classic at the Leavey Center. The win made the Panthers champions of the Cable Car Classic, marking the second in-season tourney they have claimed in as many seasons.

"We battled through some adversity today with early foul trouble but got back to Milwaukee basketball – getting the ball inside - so that was good to see," Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter said. "Akeem (Springs) came up big for us today and everyone really contributed all weekend."

The Panthers were plagued by foul trouble in the first half as four players were whistled for two fouls, and J.J. Panoske, who tallied Milwaukee's first five points of the game, was flagged three times.

Milwaukee led by as many as four points in the first half, but Santa Clara, which entered the game shooting just 27.7 percent from the field, knocked down 57.9 percent (11-for-19) of its attempts in the opening 20 minutes. A 15-6 Broncos run turned a two-point game into a 32-21 lead before a layup from Brett Prahl and a conventional three-point play by J.R. Lyle got the Panthers within 32-26 at the half.

Austin Arians was held scoreless in the first half but scored six of the Panthers' eight second-half points as Milwaukee, which shot 55 percent (11-for-20) in the second half, got back in the game. A three by Panoske drew the Panthers even at 39, but the Broncos were able to build their lead back to as many as six.

Trailing 49-43 with 10:23 remaining, Arians buried a three-pointer to open up the aforementioned 21-5 run that ended with the Panthers holding a 64-54 lead with two minutes left to play.

Akeem Springs registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals. Arians finished with 14 points, all of which came in the second half, while Panoske totaled 10 points in only 17 minutes of action.

Milwaukee continues its road trip when it visits nationally ranked Notre Dame Tuesday night (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. Eastern.
