SANTA CLARA, Calif. (November 13, 2015) – Milwaukee (1-0) scored 13 unanswered points late in the second half to turn a one-point game into a 14-point lead en route to a 71-58 victory over the University of Denver (0-1) tonight at the Cable Car Classic hosted by Santa Clara University.
Austin Arians finished with 20 points and
Matt Tiby added 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Panthers won a season opener for the first time since 2012-13.
The game got off to a slow start for both teams and the Panthers were nearly in the double bonus by the first media timeout. Things started to click for Milwaukee when Arians, who misfired on his first four attempts, drained four three-pointers in a three-minute-twenty-second span. The fourth of those treys put the Panthers on top 16-10 and they would lead by as many as eight points in the opening 20 minutes, taking a 35-30 lead into the intermission.
A basket by Tiby early in the second half gave Milwaukee a 43-33 lead, but Denver used a 12-2 run to draw even, tying the game on a layup by Joe Rosga with 10:13 remaining. A
J.J. Panoske bucket on Milwaukee's ensuing possession gave Milwaukee the lead for good though Denver remained in striking distance until that game-changing 13-0 run.
Tiby hit a pair of foul shots, and then a three-pointer by Arians, his sixth of the game, kicked off the Milwaukee spurt that culminated with a couple of freebies from Panoske.
"To be 1-0 is huge," Milwaukee head coach
Rob Jeter said. "There are some things we can do better, but I thought our poise was really good. Denver is a tough team to play and they really challenged us."
Arians finished 6-for-14 from three-point range in his first game since 2013-14 and totaled a game-high 20 points to go with three steals. Tiby went 12-for-13 from the foul line en route to his 18 points and he added 12 boards and a pair of assists to spark the Panthers to the win. As a team, Milwaukee connected on 20 of its 21 attempts from the free throw stripe.
"Austin is a guy that makes big plays and hits big shots," Jeter said. "But he doesn't just score. He makes a difference on defense and had a big steal tonight. It's great to have him back."
Denver was led by C.J. Bobbitt, who totaled 10 points.
Milwaukee continues round-robin play at the Cable Car Classic tomorrow when it meets Lipscomb at 5:30 p.m. Pacific.
