Panthers Take Five-Set Thriller From Norse

Milwaukee statistically dominant in big league win

Highland Heights, Ky. – Kayla Price and Maggie Dunbar each had a double-double to help the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team to a five-set, thrilling win over Northern Kentucky Friday night from Regents Hall.

Four players reached double figures in kills, another four reached double digits in digs and the Panthers (7-18, 5-7 Horizon) were solid throughout in the 24-26, 25-10, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10 win.

In fact, Milwaukee had 24 more points on the night than NKU (11-13, 6-6 Horizon) despite the match going the full five.

"Obviously we had a great attack tonight and our defense was incredible. This is exactly the game plan that we wanted for this match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our defenders really stepped up tonight and that's what we needed. Our offense was big tonight, too. That (Northern Kentucky) is an athletic team and we had to work hard to earn this win. It was a total team effort tonight to do just that."

Freshman Maddie Williams led the way on the attack with 17 kills, hitting an impressive .364 on the night. Dunbar had 14, Jess Kalous 12 and Celine Jones added another 10.

Defensively, Myanna Ruiz continued to show why she is one of the best in the nation this season with 26 digs to lead the way. Mykie Olsen posted a career-high 16, while Dunbar had 14 and Kayla Price added 11.

Price also had a solid outing in generaling the offense, adding a match-high 50 assists for her sixth double-double of the season.

In all, the Panthers hit a solid .252 for the match and held the Norse to just .121.

The win is the fifth five-set victory of the year for Johnson's team.

The opening set was neck-and-neck from the first serve. A kill by Dunbar tied things up at 24-24, but NKU was able to find two-in-a-row late to claim the opening set in extras.

It was all Milwaukee in the second as the Panthers responded with an emphatic win. UWM jumped out to a 12-3 lead after an ace by Ruiz and the lead swelled to 20-5 after a smashing kill by Jones. NKU tried to get back on track but Milwaukee would not let them back in the set, closing it out for a 15-point win to even things up.

Northern Kentucky staked an early 11-6 lead in the third only to see Milwaukee again respond well and come back. UWM came all the way back and even led 22-21 after a kill by Jones. But, NKU rode a hot streak late to walk away with the set and the 2-1 lead.

UWM again responded incredibly well with another big win. Milwaukee held a 15-14 lead midway through the set before a burst that saw them claim 10 of the next 12 points forced it to the fifth.

The Panthers kept it rolling early in the fifth. A pair of blocks by with kills by Jones and Price helped spark a 6-0 UWM run, swinging it to an 8-3 Panther lead. NKU did its best to claw back, but Milwaukee was up to the task, closing it out on back-to-back kills by Dunbar for the important league win.

UWM now heads to Wright State Saturday for its final road match of the regular season, taking on the Raiders at 3 p.m. Central from the C.J. McLin Gymnasium.
