Efficient Panthers Take Care Of Northern Kentucky In Three

UWM now 4-1 at home on the season

MILWAUKEE – It was a total team effort as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team cruised from start to finish in a 3-0 win over Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (5-12, 3-2 Horizon) were in control right from the start and never let their foot off the gas, downing the Norse (6-10, 1-3 Horizon) by at least five in each set: 25-17, 25-20, 25-15.

"I felt like we needed to settle down (today) and become much more efficient and be the team that was in control of the outcome," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We flipped that around today. There was a very calculated decision from the coaching staff today allowing our team to change. They have to change and they were able to really come through and be in control. It was great to see that, which made us very efficient in that match without a lot of stress."

It was an incredibly well-rounded showing by the Panthers, who dominated the stat sheet on the day.

Maggie Dunbar and Maddie Williams led the way, tied for the match-high with 11 kills.

Maddie Schmitz and Mykie Olsen led the way defensively, each recording nine digs on the day, while Kayla Price and Myanna Ruiz added eight apiece.

Price also directed the Panther attack with 28 assists on the day, also a match high.

"I really liked (our balanced attack)," Johnson said. "We're not relying on one person but we had efficiency from everybody and everybody was working hard. We haven't done this in a while where we were all working together at the same time in the same direction. We've already had five (conference) matches, so this is really exciting to me that we're starting to bring that back to Panther volleyball."

After a fast start gave NKU a 6-1 lead to start the match, Milwaukee battled back. Inching closer and closer, the Panthers tied things up at 13-13 off a solo block by Kaisa Mattson. From there it was all UWM, storming to the finish led by six kills by Williams.

It was back-and-forth early in the second set before Milwaukee slowly but surely pulled away. UWM claimed its first lead at 9-8 after a kill by Dunbar and would lead from there until the end. Dunbar had the hot hand, tallying six kills in the set including the winner to put the Panthers up 2-0.

With a 2-0 lead, Milwaukee left no doubt with a convincing win in the third. The offense got going early, mounting a quick 15-5 lead. After a brief NKU run, the Panthers were right back on track, marching to a 10-point win.

It's back to the road next weekend as Milwaukee travels to Chicago and northern Indiana for a pair of conference matches, starting Friday against Valparaiso.
