Panthers Storm Back To Down Penguins

Williams tallies career-high 18 kills to lead the way

MILWAUKEE – Three players tallied career highs in kills to lead a well-balanced attack as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team stormed back after dropping the first two for a dramatic five-set win over Youngstown State University Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

UWM had five players in double digits in both kills and digs and were statistically dominant in the 21-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-17, 15-11 win.

"We found a way tonight," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "A lot of people contributed to this win. I am so proud of them. To have to dig down after losing the first two sets and then come back, it takes some guts and I told them they have the power to do it and they did it.

"I was really proud of the offense because it was very split and very balanced and that's the Panther way."

With the win, the Panthers (6-16, 4-6 Horizon) improve to 5-2 at the Klotsche Center this season.

Maddie Williams was dominant all night long, tallying a career-high 18 kills to lead all players Friday in the win. Sammi Herron reached double-digit kills for the second-straight match, notching 14.

Celine Jones had 12 kills and Jess Kalous added 11 – both equaling career highs. Senior Maggie Dunbar also added another 12 kills to help the balanced attack.

Defensively, the Panthers were outstanding. Myanna Ruiz led all players with 25 kills. Kayla Price added 14 more, while Dunbar (12), Maddie Schmitz (11) and Mykie Olsen (10) all also record double figures on the night.

The double-double is the third of the season for Dunbar.

In all, the Panthers had 21 more digs than the Penguins (79-58) and 10 more kills (73-63) and hit .259 en route to the big win.

Milwaukee came out battling hard. Williams started the night with an remarkable six kills in the opening set but YSU (8-16, 2-7 Horizon) was able to just squeak by for the opening win.

The Panthers continued to get closer in set number two. After falling down early, UWM used a 6-0 run to claim a 20-19 lead. From there it was back-and-forth and the Penguins were able to just get by once again, this time in extras.

In the third, it was once again an even match until Milwaukee made a big run late. Down two, UWM made a 6-0 run with kills from five different players to go up 21-17. From there, they would never look back, closing things out on a kill by Jones to start the comeback.

It was another big run that decided the winner in the fourth. Tied at 14-14, the Panthers made a 5-0 run to take control. From there, Milwaukee closes things out with six kills by five different players to force things to the deciding fifth set.

The fifth was a game of runs. UWM claimed a 7-5 lead, only to see YSU rattle off four in a row for a 9-7 edge. After a timeout by Milwaukee, the Panthers went on a tear. Johnson's squad got four huge blocks in a 6-0 run to take a commanding lead, setting it up for Herron to close things out with two more kills for the big win.

"We started off that match really focusing on the block and it was just okay in the beginning, but we gradually got better as the match went on," Johnson said. "I was excited to see that they could battle back and that we won as a team. It's very exciting. Hopefully we can carry this momentum going forward."

Milwaukee is right back at the Klotsche Center Saturday, hosting league-leading Cleveland State at 4 p.m.
