CLEVELAND (January 2, 2015) –
Host Cleveland State (7-8,1-0 Horizon) shot 82 percent (23-for-28) from the field in the second half to collect an 84-57 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-10, 0-1 Horizon) tonight at the Wolstein Center in the Horizon League opener for both teams. Matt Tiby and Steve McWhorter scored 16 points each to lead Milwaukee, which shot 35 percent (14-for-40) from the field for the night.

The game was a tale of two halves. In the first half, Milwaukee, the defending Horizon League Tournament champion, lived by the three-pointer, shooting 38 percent (5-for-13) from beyond the arc to help it to a 30-27 lead at the break. The Panthers, who shot 42 percent from the field and held the Vikings to 36 percent in the opening period, led by as many as seven points (28-21).

The early going in the second half was a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands 10 times in the first six minutes and 19 seconds. McWhorter hit a pair of free throws to put the Panthers on top, 43-42, but a layup by Demonte Flannigan sparked a 7-0 Vikings run that put the hosts ahead, 49-43.

After Tiby knocked down a pair of foul shots to bring Milwaukee within four points, Trey Lewis scored nine points in a 14-5 run that gave Cleveland State a 63-50 advantage. The Panthers would get no closer than 11 points the remainder of the way.

In addition to his 16 points, Tiby corralled nine rebounds to just miss out on his fourth double-double of the season. McWhorter added six rebounds and four assists to his 16 points.

Lewis netted 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Cleveland State, which also received 18 points from Anton Grady and 16 from Charlie Lee. The Vikings shot 58 percent from the field for the night and committed only five turnovers.

Milwaukee looks to bounce back when it closes out its five-game road trip Sunday at Detroit at 12 p.m. Central. That game will be televised locally in Milwaukee on WCGV-TV (My 24).
