MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team overcame a six-point deficit in the final seconds of regulation only to fall on a three-pointer at the buzzer in a heartbreaking 64-61 loss to Omaha Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
Â
"That is the mark of our team, we never give up," UWM head coach
Kyle Rechlicz said. "I wish we would play with that same aggressiveness and sense of urgency when we tip off and continue to play with that for 40 minutes. We need to bring that energy from the tip."
Â
Junior
Jordyn Swan (16 points) and freshman
Jenny Lindner (15 points) each finished with career-highs to lead the offense. Swan tied her career-high with six rebounds as well.
Â
The Panthers (2-5) trailed the Mavericks (4-5), 60-54, with 38 seconds left in the contest. Swan buried a clutch three-pointer and Lindner sank a pair of free throws to draw UWM within one and then tied it on a layup with just six seconds remaining. Felicia Anderson then made the shot of the night, sinking a three from the right wing as the game clock expired.
Â
"That is a heartbreaker, but I told our team in the huddle afterwards that if losing this game on a last-second shot helps us understand how to play in a game like this once we get to conference, then I am ok with the loss as long as it will apply and help us in the future," Rechlicz said.
Â
Senior
Ashley Green, the sixth-leading scorer in the nation, was held to just 10 points by the UNO defense. She added eight rebounds and five assists.
Â
"I think we will see that a lot," Rechlicz said. "She didn't have an opportunity to get many touches on the ball and I know it frustrated her."
Â
Brianna Bogard led the Mavericks with a game-high 20 points, making 13 of 16 attempts from the free throw line.
Â
The Panthers did not help themselves in the second half, starting 1-of-10 from the floor after intermission to trail 39-33 after a 6-0 UNO spurt.
Â
The team battled all half and never let the deficit get too large, drawing within a possession on a handful of occasions before the final charge.
Â
The first half featured six ties and six lead changes, with each team taking turns as the aggressor. The Panthers trailed early, yet surged ahead on the strength of a 10-2 run. A three-pointer by Lindner tied the game at 16-16 and Swan's pair of free throws at the 9:28 mark gave UWM the 18-16 edge and capped the spree.
Â
Milwaukee held the lead most of the remainder of the first half and were seemingly still in control when senior
Macie Dorow's three-pointer from the wing made it 30-26 with 2:29 to go.
Â
But from there, the Mavericks took control, scoring the final seven points of the frame to take the 33-30 lead into the locker room.
Â
For the game, Milwaukee was held to 33.9 percent shooting (19-of-56) from the floor while Omaha finished at 40.4 percent (21-of-52). Points in the paint (28-22) and the rebound battle (38-36) both went to Omaha.
Â
Up next, the team heads to the UWM Panther Arena to welcome Eastern Illinois for a midweek battle. Tip time is set for noon as part of a daylong women's/men's doubleheader downtown.
