MILWAUKEE (December 19, 2014) – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team has shown tremendous progress in its academic record and a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) score is expected for the 2013-14 academic year when figures are announced in the spring.
"We are steadfast in our commitment to the academic excellence for all of our student-athletes, including our men's basketball team," Milwaukee Director of Athletics
Amanda Braun said. "Both as a University and as an athletics department, we have implemented changes that were designed to positively impact the academic performance of our student-athletes, and the anticipated men's basketball APR score that will be released in the spring proves that the changes have been beneficial."
Milwaukee's anticipated perfect APR score would give it a multiyear score of 940, which would render it eligible for postseason play during the 2015-16 season. The NCAA assesses penalties for scores that fall below 930. The 1000 score would also be the highest ever achieved by the Milwaukee men's basketball program, another sign that the program is providing all of the necessary resources for its student-athletes.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Last season, the Panthers collected 21 wins and earned the program's fourth-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, Milwaukee picked up 10 true road wins en route to its third postseason berth in the last four years.
"I am proud of how this group of guys has been able to take care of business both on and off the court," Milwaukee Head Coach
Rob Jeter said. "To achieve a perfect APR score, while also competing for and winning a Horizon League championship is quite an accomplishment and on top of that, these young men have been tremendous representatives of the University and the city of Milwaukee."
The Panthers open up a five-game road trip tomorrow at SIU Edwardsville.
