Panthers Cruise To League Tournament Final

Total team effort sparks Milwaukee to sweep of Valpo

Rochester, Mich. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team dominated from start to finish in a three-set sweep over Valparaiso University Saturday evening from the O'rena in the Horizon League Tournament Semifinal.

Milwaukee (17-13) hit an outstanding .352 for the match and led nearly the entire way in one of its most complete matches of the season.

The 25-20, 25-10, 25-19 win marked the third-straight for Milwaukee over Valparaiso (25-8) this season.

Host Oakland won 3-0 over Youngstown State in the other semifinal match of the day, setting up a tournament final between the top two seeds on Sunday.

Julie Kolinske led the Panther attack with 17 kills, while Myanna Ruiz and Maggie Dunbar had nine apiece.

Taylor Golabowski tallied an impressive 20 digs, with Ruiz adding another 10.

Kayla Price racked up 39 assists in the sweep.

"The team was so focused and so driven for this match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "It was the best team effort. We were so decisive. Totally played the game plan. It was great."

UWM jumped all over the Crusaders right out of the gates. VU was able to keep the score close, but Milwaukee hit .300 in the first set to jump out to the early lead.

It was all Panthers in the second frame. Back-to-back kills by Kolinske made it 11-2 early on. The lead swelled to 19-6 on a kill by Price and Ruiz closed things out at 25-10. UWM hit a resounding .429 in the emphatic second set.

Things were a bit closer in the third. Valpo actually held a 12-11 lead midway through, but Ruiz tallied three-straight kills with a Dunbar ace in the middle to help spark a 6-0 run and it was all Panthers from there.

Milwaukee will now take on host Oakland in the Horizon League Tournament Championship match Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Central.
