Five In-State Stars Sign With Panther Track & Field

Corfeld announces five standouts during early signing period

MILWAUKEE - Five in-state standouts have all signed their National Letters of Intent and will join the class of 2019 for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee track and field team, Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld announced today.

Shannon Dugan of Oak Creek, Wis.; Nicole Hohn of Suamico, Wis.; Rebecca Van Thiel of Hilbert, Wis.; Miles Kilpin of East Troy, Wis. and Marcus Matsche of Kimberly, Wis. have all signed their papers and will join Corfeld's squad next fall.

Dugan comes to UWM from Oak Creek High School where she recently wrapped up her prep cross country career at the Division I State Cross Country Meet. That marked the third-straight trip to the state meet for Dugan, who has also done well in the 800m in track.

Hohn also just finished up at the state meet, placing 49th to help Bay Port High School to a 10th-place finish overall. Hohn has also qualified for the track state meet twice each of the past two years, earning a spot on the podium in the 4x800m relay as a junior.

Van Thiel is the third distance star in the group. She came in 11th overall at this year's state cross country meet following 19th and 25th place showings the past two years. In track, Van Thiel has qualified for the Wisconsin state championships five times over her first three years with a state title in the 4x400m relay. The multi-sport athlete also has excelled at basketball for Brillion High School, helping the Lions to a 17-8 record last season.

"With the switch over from 4,000 to 5,000 meter cross country races for WIAA women, Becky, Nicole and Shannon will be better able to blend smoothly into our program," Corfeld said. "All are very talented athletes and have limitless potential. I am looking forward to their immediate impact on our team."

Kilpin is one of the top throwers in the state heading into his senior year at East Troy High. After taking fourth in discus and 12th in shot put at state last year, Kilpin is primed for a strong finish to his prep career. His PR toss of 174-5 in discus won him a conference title and his PR of 52-3 in shot put at sectionals earned him a trip to state in both events.

Matsche is the top returner in his class heading into his final year at the DI powerhouse Kimberly. He finished narrowly behind a pair of state champion teammates in both discus and shot put in helping the Papermakers to a team state title last year, just one week after PR's of 55-4 ½ in shot put and 163-3 in discus at sectionals

Additionally, Matsche has been a standout on the football field and will take center stage Friday as a starting linebacker as Kimberly takes its perfect 13-0 record up against Arrowhead in the Division I State Championship game at Camp Randall.

"Marcus and Miles will bolster our throws program for the future," Corfeld said. "We are looking to become a power in this important area of our sport. Having two of the top throwers commit early to our program sets a precedent. We look forward to have Marcus and Miles working together with coach Peter Delzer through their throwing careers at UWM. The lion's share of these two signing at Milwaukee is owed to new coach Delzer, a two-time Division III National Champion. He is known in the region as an up and coming throws expert and we are fortunate to have him on our staff."

Added coach Delzer, "I am excited for the addition of Miles and Marcus to the UWM track and field program. They are the pieces needed to make the UWM throws program the best in the conference. They both possess the ability to gain accolades at the national level and I look forward to their development at the next level."
